Weatherford College builds on the success of its Health and Human Science programs with an online Bachelor of Applied Technology (BAT) in Medical and Health Services Management Degree (MHSM).

A healthcare manager oversees the day-to-day operations of the facility, ensuring both effectively and efficiently operations in terms of budget, the goals of the facility’s practitioners and the needs of the community.

Weatherford College’s Bachelor of Applied Technology in Medical and Health Service Management takes a multidisciplinary approach to prepare its students for entry level positions and career advancement opportunities. Students can expect to expand their knowledge of the US healthcare system, law and ethics, quality and risk management, long-term care administration, health information technology, public and community leadership and financial management.

Typical Responsibilities

  • Improve efficiency and quality in delivering healthcare services
  • Develop department goals and objectives
  • Ensure that the facility in which the work is up to date on and compliant with laws and regulations
  • Recruit, train, and supervise staff members
  • Manage the finances of the facility, such as patient fees and billing
  • Create work schedules
  • Prepare and monitor budgets and spending to ensure departments operate within funding limits
  • Represent the facility at various meeting or governing boards
  • Communicate with members of the medical staff and department heads

At the end of the program, student should be able to demonstrate competency in the following five domains:

The ability to communicate clearly and concisely with internal and external customers, establish and maintain relationships, and facilitate constructive interactions with individuals and groups

The ability to align personal and organizational conduct with ethical and professional standards that include a responsibility to the patient and community, a service orientation, and a commitment to lifelong learning and improvement.

4. Health and Healthcare Environment

The understanding of the healthcare system and the environment in which healthcare managers and providers function.

5. Business

The ability to apply business principles, including systems thinking, to the healthcare environment.

Designed with the working professional in mind, the BAT program is fully online. Classes are held utilizing ZOOM conference technology which the allows students to learn from the comfort of their home.   Students are required to have video and audio technology for all virtual sessions.

To successfully complete the MHSM program, students will be required to complete a 144-hour Health Care Management Practicum during their last semester. Like an internship, the practicum allows students to work with local healthcare organizations and professionals to apply their knowledge while gaining practical managerial experience.  The practicum is not online and will required physical attendance at an organization.  

 

Career Opportunities

Opportunities abound for graduates of the bachelor’s degree in Medical and Health Services Management.  Careers in Medical Practice Manager, Business Office Manager, Clinical Manager, Practice Administrator, Practice Manager, Facilities Manager, Patient Coordinator, Medical Office Coordinator, Clinical Administrator, and Office Manager all become accessible to the BAT graduate. A recent review yielded 169 current openings across the state of Texas appropriate to those with a bachelor’s in Medical and Health Services Management. Graduates of the Bachelor of Applied Technology in Medical and Health Services Management would also be eligible to apply for acceptance into Master’s Programs in Health Care Administration.
