Overview
Recovery support services is an evidence-based practice funded through the Substance
Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) that supports services to increase
long-term recovery and recovery quality. Services are provided by peer specialists.
Peer specialists help initiate services like counseling, sober housing, transportation
and medications. Peers provide support before, during and after treatment.
Recovery Support Peer Specialists must acknowledge lived experience with substance
use disorders.
Recovery Support Peer Specialist Program courses include:
- DAAC.1003.101 – Alcohol/Drug Modalities 30 contact hours
- DAAC.1004.101 – Drug/Alcohol Abuse 40 contact hours
- DAAC.1005.101 – Practicum: Substance Abuse Addiction 250 contact hours
Requirements
- 18 years of age
- Have lived experience with a substance use issue
- Have a high school dipoloma or General Equivalency Diploma
- Be willing to appropriately share your recovery story
- Be able to demonstrate current self-directed recovery
- SATISFACTORY CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK – Completed form to be processed by WC (required by Texas Health and Human Services.)
- Complete training including practicum experiential learning

Funding assistance through the Workforce Education Grant and Weatherford College Foundation Scholarship for Workforce Education may be available for eligible applicants, until funds are depleted. Please visit the Financial Assistance page for applications. This program does not qualify for FAFSA.
