Overview

Hemodialysis technicians, also often known as dialysis technicians, work closely with doctors and nurses to provide patient care to people with permanent kidney failure. This hemodialysis technician certification course provides the class and clinical requirements needed to develop the skills necessary to fulfill the job requirements of a hemodialysis technician.

The hemodialysis technician course, which includes medical terminology, prepares you for an entry-level hemodialysis technician position by teaching you the proper methods of evaluating and managing patients with end-stage renal disease. Upon completion of the certified hemodialysis technician training course, you will be presented with an opportunity to participate in a Clinical Experience to meet your clinical requirements. By meeting the class/lab and clinical requirements, you will be prepared to sit for the Hemodialysis Technician (CHT) certification offered by the Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology (BONENT).

Requirements

  • This class requires the Core Curriculum For The Dialysis Technician, 6th ed.: A Comprehensive review of Hemodialysis textbook, which will be provided.
  • Students will need to purchase scrubs and appropriate foot wear for a health care lab setting.
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Student must have a current certification in a clinical area such as Certified Nurse Aide, Patient Care Technician, Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic, Certified Medical Assistant, Nursing License or other health-related program approved by the Program Coordinator.

Healthcare Program Immunizations

  • HEPATITIS B - 3 shot series or Heplisav 2 shot series or titer 
  • MEASLES, MUMPS RUBELLA (MMR) - 2 shot series or titer
  • TETANUS/DIPHTHERIA/PERTUSSIS (TDAP) - One dose within the past 10 years and valid through the course/clinical
  • TUBERCULIN SKIN TEST (TB) - a skin test or chest x-ray that is administered and valid within 12 months of course completion date is required
  • VARICELLA (CHICKEN POX) - 2 shot series or titer

Additional Healthcare Requirements

  • 18 YEARS OF AGE 
  • HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA, HSE/GED – Unofficial copy can be uploaded
  • DRIVER'S LICENSE OR GOVERNMENT PHOTO ID - Must be valid
  • SOCIAL SECURITY CARD – Must be signed
  • CPR - BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS) CERTIFICATION MUST BE FROM AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION will be provided with this program
  • SATISFACTORY CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK – Completed form to be processed by WC 
  • PERSONAL HEALTH INSURANCE – Recommended, not required

Scholarships

This program will be eligible for Workforce PELL in July of 2026. Funding assistance through the Workforce Education Grant and Weatherford College Foundation Scholarship for Workforce Education may be available for eligible applicants, until funds are depleted.
