Overview

The Basic Electrical Program is a short program that covers the fundamentals of electricity, residential and commercial wiring applications, applications of motors and transformers, basic motor controls, National Electric Code, lighting, and the devices that control them. At the completion of the program, students will be trained in the skills needed to begin a career installing, maintaining and servicing residential, commercial, and industrial electrical equipment, alongside a licensed electrician. Included in the course is OSHA 10 certification. Students will also have the option to apply for their Apprentice Electrician License through TDLR.

  • ELPT.1011 - Basic Electrical Theory  64 contact hours   
  • ELPT.1000 - Basic Electrical Wiring 64 contact hours
  • OSHA.10 - Certification
  • OSHT.1003 - Workplace Safety 12 contact hours

Requirements

Applicants must complete the Basic Electrical program application BEFORE they can be admitted into the program and are eligible for registration. If under 18, Minor Consent Form is required and must be completed then uploaded with the application.

NOTICE: Certain criminal history may prevent a student from being approved to register for a program or attending clinical/practicum/externship. In some areas it can prohibit student from employment and/or obtaining licensure through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). Students should verify eligibility before applying.

(The code book can be purchased by any vendor, such as Amazon.)

Students will be required to purchase and bring to class the items on the supply list:

Career Options

Upon successful completion, graduates will receive a Weatherford College certificate of completion and their OSHA 10 certification. Students can work as an Electrical Apprentice, Electrical Helper, Inside Wireman Apprentice, Wireman Apprentice, and a Construction Worker. According to Texas Career Check, the projected growth for Electricians in Texas is 18%. Electrical technicians are in demand due to mass workforce retirement. As Electrical technicians get training and experience on the job, opportunities are available to grow and move up in the industry.

Scholarships

Funding assistance through the Workforce Education Grant and Weatherford College Foundation Scholarship for Workforce Education may be available for eligible applicants, until funds are depleted. Please visit the Financial Assistance page for applications. This program does not qualify for FAFSA.
