Overview

The Weatherford College Choir an auditioned ensemble that studies, rehearses, and performs a wide variety of choral literature. The ensemble utilizes many types of music from classical to popular music. These selections are performed on a concert each semester. Students may also be asked to perform at various events on campus and in our community throughout the year. This ensemble is geared for all music majors, students who have enjoyed being in a choir in the past, and any new student who is interested in participating in the joy of making music within a group. This choir was formed to provide its members an enriching and expressive musical experience and to develop the tools to keep music in their lives past their collegiate years. The course will focus on having students organizing themselves for rehearsals, encouraging the highest quality of performances, developing their vocal and some basic music skills, and utilizing teamwork within the group encouraging interaction and involvement. Auditions consist of performing a prepared solo selection, some sight-reading exercises, and some aural skills testing.

The Opera Workshop is a course designed to further student understanding and appreciation of opera and some select musical theatre pieces. Students are expected to have received some prior vocal training before enrolling in this class, and to also enroll in private voice lessons as well. This class will primarily focus on studying and learning appropriate operatic and musical theater literature, stage movement and interpretation, with some stagecraft and stage makeup topics as well. Experience with foreign languages is beneficial as some pieces will be sung in their original language, generally Italian, French and German; as well as English. The final for this course will be a public concert and members may also be as asked to participate in public outreach as well. With emphasis on the rehearsal process, students will gain the skills and confidence to perform with excellence.
