The Automotive Technology Degree Program at Weatherford College, offered in partnership with Gilchrist Automotive, provides a comprehensive, hands-on education using industry-standard diagnostic tools and equipment. The curriculum prepares students for roles in both service and management across the modern automotive industry.
Program Overview
Students receive in-depth classroom and laboratory instruction in:
- Electrical Systems
- Brake Systems
- Steering and Suspension Systems
- Engine Repair and Performance
- Climate Control Systems
- Hybrid, Electric Vehicle (EV), and Diesel Propulsion Systems
- Drivetrain and Automatic Transmissions
The program emphasizes safety, professionalism, and diagnostic precision while preparing graduates for a wide range of positions in the automotive service sector.
Partnership with Gilchrist Automotive
The program operates in partnership with Gilchrist Automotive, a leading regional dealership group. Through this partnership:
- Qualified students may receive sponsorships that cover tuition, books, and fees.
- Admission is selective and cohorts provide a focused learning environment.
- Each cohort begins in the Fall Semester and completes automotive coursework at the end of the following Summer Semester.
Program Outcomes and Career Opportunities
Upon completion, graduates will be able to:
- Use diagnostic/service equipment and service information systems effectively and safely.
- Apply foundational electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical principles.
- Diagnose and repair braking, steering, suspension, and powertrain systems.
- Perform maintenance and inspections in accordance with industry standards.
- Understand and service hybrid/EV systems following high-voltage safety protocols.
- Communicate professionally with customers and colleagues.
- Demonstrate readiness for ASE certification examinations.
Career paths include Automotive Service Technician, Diagnostic Specialist, Service Advisor, Shop Foreperson, and entry-level Management roles. Graduates may also pursue manufacturer-specific training and advanced certifications.
Application Process
- Complete the Weatherford College General Application — Select “Automotive Technology AAS” under Undergraduate Programs.
- Submit the Automotive Technology Form — After submitting the general application, complete and submit the program-specific form.
- Interview and Assessment — Applications are reviewed beginning in late May. Selected applicants will be invited to a panel interview and a Mechanical Aptitude Test.
- Admissions Decisions — Notifications of status begin on June 15. Accepted students receive detailed next steps for enrollment and orientation.
