WC volunteers assist San Saba with flood cleanup
Last week, a group of students, faculty, and staff from Weatherford College, along with community volunteers, traveled to San Saba to assist with the ongoing flood relief efforts following the July 4 floods in Central Texas.
The trip was a single-day service project focused on helping the San Saba community with various cleanup and repair tasks. Volunteers organized into several teams to tackle a range of jobs across the community.
A team of 34 students and seven volunteers from the Love Weatherford crew collected 350 trash bags of debris in approximately seven hours, removing 4.5 tons of trash from the area.
A chainsaw and debris group cleared and repaired 1,200 feet of fencing, chainsawed four trees and removed about 100 large pieces of wood to help a local family secure livestock and prepare their property for repairs. Another 120 yards of fence line and barbed wire were removed by a different group of volunteers.
Another crew worked on a local home, where they demolished and installed new subflooring across several rooms. And a group of eight volunteers sorted, labeled and boxed around 100 packages containing more than 5,000 clothing items and emergency supplies for distribution.
“All I can say is wow,” said Scott Glaze, city manager of San Saba. “Those kids from Weatherford College are truly amazing. They have huge hearts that care about helping people. We are truly blessed by God in this town!”
This intense day of service wouldn’t have been possible without the support of several local businesses and community groups that provided equipment, water, and financial donations, including Imperial Construction, CBRE, Serenity Pool Solutions, Zan Prince, the Weatherford Chamber of Commerce, North Side Baptist Church College Ministry, Buffalo Rental Equipment, Love Weatherford, Chad Edwards with Paschall Insurance Solutions, Linda and Steven Chapman and K Bar K Operations.
“Your kindness and contributions made the day a meaningful success,” said Grant Mills, WC student life coordinator. “Together, we made a lasting impact in the San Saba community, and we couldn’t have done it without you. Your donation not only supported the efforts of this single day but also helped foster a spirit of service that will continue to inspire others.”
