WC students gain access to $1.1 million in childcare assistance
Weatherford College students now have access to $1.1 million in childcare assistance through a recent grant with the Texas Workforce Commission.
Childcare support through Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students in need of childcare support are encouraged to register immediately at the Texas Child Care Connection.
“Remember to select that you are attending Weatherford College to jump to the top of the waiting list,” said Dr. Shannon Ydoyaga, executive vice president of academic services.
Once registered, the state will issue a voucher to the student, which can be used at their chosen childcare provider. Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas has negotiated rates with providers to ensure affordability.
“All families who meet our eligibility requirements will be assessed a weekly parent share of cost based on their gross monthly income, but it will not be more than 7 percent of their calculated income per month,” explained Kelley Fontenot, senior workforce development manager for childcare with Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas.
Students with no income will not have to pay a share of the childcare cost.
“We understand the cost of childcare can be a major barrier to students pursuing their educational goals,” said WC President Tod Allen Farmer. “This funding will make a real difference in the lives of our students and their families. Our exceptional relationship with Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas, along with Dr. Ydoyaga’s hard work, made this vision become a reality.”
