WC honors outstanding faculty, staff at annual awards dinner
Weatherford College faculty and staff were recognized for their dedication and years of service at the annual employee awards dinner on Dec. 5 at Dove Ridge Vineyard.
Christel Brenner, director of clinical education for the respiratory care program, was awarded the 2024 Faculty Member of the Year honor. Last year’s awardee, Emily Yager, presented the award, describing Brenner as compassionate and optimistic.
“[Brenner] is gentle-hearted and treats everyone with care and empathy,” Yager said. “She maintains a positive outlook in challenging situations and is nurturing to students while encouraging them to reach for higher goals. She strikes the perfect balance between charisma and courage."
Brenner was humbled by the award.
"I really appreciate everyone,” she said. “I love meeting new people, and I love being a part of Weatherford College, and my students are my passion. I love teaching; I love to share my knowledge. I couldn't have picked a better career."
Tammy Peters presented the Staff Member of the Year award to Terri Thompson, recognizing her invaluable contributions to Weatherford College.
"What sets this staff member apart isn't just their overall knowledge or expertise; it's their positive attitude, generosity of spirit and ability to bring people together," said Peters. "They approach each task with enthusiasm and determination, always willing to lend a helping hand, share their knowledge and ensure that everyone around them feels valued and supported."
Thompson, moved by the recognition, took the opportunity to praise her dedicated team in the financial aid office. She highlighted the individual contributions of Tammy Peters, Amy Malugani, Amanda Ingle, Christie Collins, Bailey Brock and Rayanne Hukill emphasizing their knowledge, compassion, and unwavering support for students.
"Then I have my ride-or-die bestie, Miss Rayanne Hukle, who grew up with me in financial aid," Thompson said. "We both had young children when we started, and we watched them grow. We've had such joy, and we've endured such sorrow together, and we prayed for each other and with each other. She has always had my back. And she's my sister that I'm gonna miss a lot because I retire—not that I'm counting, but—in like, 57 days and, you know, a few hours or whatever.”
Dr. Stephen Duarte received the Faculty Member on the Rise Award. Since joining Weatherford College in 2022, Duarte has shown exceptional dedication to student success and innovation in his leadership of WC's Bachelor of Applied Technology in Medical and Health Services Management program. He has implemented creative approaches to engage students, including building a home studio to better connect with night students and integrating artificial intelligence to address diverse learning styles.
"His dedication to creativity and unwavering commitment to student success exemplifies what it means to be a true leader in education,” said Samantha Grimsley, last year’s award recipient. “He has developed an innovative yet rigorous approach to preparing students for real-world health care settings, ensuring they graduate not only with the knowledge but with the adaptability to excel in the challenges they will encounter, recognizing the diverse needs of students."
Penny Garcia, Weatherford College's fleet manager and lead driver, received the Staff Member on the Rise Award. Garcia's dedication to ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of students, faculty and staff earned her high praise. Her willingness to go above and beyond, including providing courtesy rides and assisting with security shifts, demonstrates her commitment to the WC community.
“She takes her job very seriously, and her dedication shows,” said WC Police Chief Anthony Bigongiari. “She keeps our vehicles running even when it requires the creative use of duct tape, zip ties or JB Weld. ... For three years, she's gotten our students, faculty and staff safely and efficiently where they need to be, even when our beloved Freightliner bus left her stranded at scenic locales like Austin and Waco.”
