WC honors employees at annual awards dinner

Weatherford College faculty and staff were recognized for their dedication and years of service at the annual employee awards dinner earlier this month at Dove Ridge Vineyard.
Lori Boyd, vocational nursing program director, was awarded the 2025 Faculty Member of the Year honor. Last year’s recipient, Christel Brenner, presented the award, describing Boyd as equal parts leader, mentor, strategist and cheerleader.
“In the classroom, this educator transforms complex ideas into meaningful learning, bridging theory and real-world experience with the kind of skill that makes you wonder if teaching might actually be their superpower,” Brenner said. “When offering individualized support, developing innovative teaching strategies, or creating equitable opportunities for growth, this remarkable faculty member always keeps students at the center of everything they do.”
Boyd was moved by the recognition, attributing the honor to the college’s philosophy and her colleagues.
“I do believe that we're called to be mentors and strategists and leaders. But first and foremost, we're just called to care,” Boyd said. “I really believe that the caring culture that the board and President Farmer demand is what we're supposed to be doing. … I feel like my faculty that I work with are the recipients of this award. They are all high performers. They do an outstanding job, and they make me look this good.”
Terri Thompson presented the Staff Member of the Year award to Debbie Alexander, executive assistant to the executive vice president of instruction. Thompson highlighted Alexander's 16-year career at WC and her essential role in supporting department chairs, deans and administration.
“[She is one of] those who work diligently behind the scenes, dutifully keeping tasks, schedules and documents organized,” Thompson said. “To those that do their job well, they don't only keep things running smoothly, but they have encouraged everyone around them to thrive... She's an exceptional individual who embodies the qualities of dedication, professionalism, and integrity. Her grace and compassion for others truly personifies the WC creed of ‘We Care.’”
Alexander expressed deep gratitude for her time at the college.
“I am so blessed to work for Weatherford College,” she said. “I've had some of the most amazing supervisors and leaders that I have ever worked for in my entire career. I can't think of anywhere better that I have ever worked in my life.”
Dr. Leslie Hancock, director of the early childhood education and teaching bachelor’s degree, received the Faculty Member on the Rise Award. Executive Vice President of Instruction Dr. Shannon Ydoyaga praised Hancock’s exceptional work ethic and ability to represent the college in the community.
“With a strong wit and work ethic, she consistently motivates everyone in their presence, meets deadlines and serves our students,” Ydoyaga said. “Colleagues say they feel fortunate to get to work with her on a daily basis, and Weatherford College is blessed to have her here as a leader.”
Hancock, an avid runner, used a running analogy regarding a "blind curve" to describe her journey to WC.
“Sometimes you have to trust the blind curve, and it was a blessing,” Hancock said. “It has been an absolute privilege to work here and to serve the community and work alongside each one of you. … To our students, you are the reason I lace up.”
Grant Mills, student life coordinator, received the Staff Member on the Rise Award. Presenter Jaci Edwards described Mills as a former WC student who returned to transform campus life with energy and enthusiasm.
“He has created remarkable opportunities for students, from leadership training to career development,” Edwards said. “Whether coordinating student activities or designing the next leadership opportunity for the student ambassador program, he approaches every task with creativity, enthusiasm and a sense of humor that brightens every day.”
Mills immediately deferred praise to the students in attendance.
“This award is an example of you guys, and y'all are the reason I'm passionate about my job,” Mills said, addressing the table of Student Ambassadors. “I'm thankful for students like this that allow us to enjoy our jobs.”
