WC clears hurdle for Workforce Pell Grants
Weatherford College has received state certification for three workforce training programs seeking eligibility under the new Workforce Pell Grant program, a significant milestone that could expand access to federal financial aid for students pursuing short-term, high-demand career training.
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board notified the college Thursday, July 23, that its HVAC, Basic Machining and Advanced Machining programs meet state-level certification requirements for Workforce Pell participation. WC immediately moved forward with submitting paperwork for the federal review process through the U.S. Department of Education.
Created through federal legislation signed into law in 2025, the Workforce Pell Grant program represents the most significant expansion of Pell Grant eligibility in decades. The initiative allows eligible students to receive federal grant assistance for certain high-quality, short-term workforce training programs that prepare graduates for in-demand occupations.
The state certification process evaluates whether programs align with workforce needs identified by the state and whether they prepare students for careers that offer strong employment opportunities and economic mobility. Institutions also must demonstrate industry support and employer demand for program graduates.
Both the basic and advanced machining programs reported 100% completion and job placement rates at the time of certification application. The basic HVAC program had an 88% completion rate and 70% job placement rate.
College administrators have worked on the approval process since the initiative was announced in 2025. The college plans to submit its certification documentation to the U.S. Department of Education for final review and approval.
“It is the hope that expanding Pell eligibility to these programs will not only assist those students who are in the programs currently but that the increased access to financial assistance will result in an expansion of these programs, allowing WC to aid in facilitation of meeting labor-market demands,” said Bailey Brock, director of financial aid.
Brock said she knows a few colleges in Oklahoma taking advantage of this program but doesn’t know of another Texas college that has.
“Many of our financial aid colleagues have completely opted out,” she said, “But they likely will opt in once they see the impact.”
To qualify for Workforce Pell funding, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, meet federal Pell Grant eligibility requirements and enroll in an approved Workforce Pell program. Unlike traditional Pell Grants, Workforce Pell eligibility may be available to students who already hold a bachelor's degree.
