“Little Women” takes Alkek stage
Weatherford College Fine Arts presents “Little Women” on the Alkek Fine Arts Center stage Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 29 through March 2 at 7 p.m. each evening. Admission is free for this PG-rated play.
Set in Massachusetts during the American Civil War, “Little Women” shows how the women of the March family resiliently find moments of great joy.
Jo March is an aspiring writer, desperate to break free of convention and be her own woman. When the neighbor boy Theodore “Laurie” Laurence develops romantic feelings for her that she can’t reciprocate, her world is shaken.
As she gets older and the people she loves most continue to age and grow, she defiantly resists, until it becomes apparent that her childhood fantasies cannot withstand stark reality. She finds inspiration in her younger sister Beth, whose wisdom and kindness finally help Jo face life on life’s terms.
“When we learn about wars in terms of history, the women who stayed at home are often left in the most obscure footnotes,” said James Brownlee, director. “In this story, four sisters, their mother and their maid are making life bearable in the face of overwhelming odds. This is a story of defiant optimism, which I feel many of us need right now.”
The WC cast includes Sage Hale as Marmie/Aunt March, Emily Farmer as Meg, Hannah Baker as Jo, Bria Honea as Beth, Tylie Sabbatini as Amy, Cathryn Campbel as Hannah/Mrs. Mingott/Messenger, Micah Chesney as “Laurie” Laurence, Bruce Adkison as John Brooks/Mr. Dashwood and Logan Thomas as Mr. Laurence/Mr. March/Doctor.
The production crew includes Kaleb Watson, assistant director; Jasmine Houze, stage manager; Tylie Sabbatini, costume designer; Rickie Noe, set design; Alex McCalla and Mickey Brownlee, properties; Cameron Streck, sound engineer; and stage crew Valeria Null, Wyatt McElroy, Victoria Layton, Brandon Wooley and Dakota Hein.
“Little Women” is written by Kate Hamill, adapted from the novel by Louisa May Alcott.
