Highly awarded flutists to make guest appearances at third annual WC Flute Fest
The Weatherford College Flute Festival is back for its third year on Saturday, March 23, in the Alkek Fine Arts Center.
“This festival is an opportunity to bring the best of the fine arts to Parker County,” said event coordinator Gina Dexter. “Many of the participants may not go to greater DFW for these experiences, and this brings the experiences to them and allows them to see the wonderful opportunities available for them at WC.”
Young musicians are invited to attend this free from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Preregister here.
“This is a valuable experience to the participants because they get to work hands on with international, world-class musicians and then take those enriching experiences back into their communities to strengthen their individual programs,” Dexter said.
The general public is invited to attend a free concert at 5 p.m. featuring guest artists Amy Porter and Seetha Shivaswamy.
Porter, the most awarded American solo flutist, has gained international recognition through her performances in major concert halls across Asia and the United States, as well as her numerous wins in international competitions. A graduate of the Juilliard School, she has held prestigious positions in orchestras such as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and is currently a professor of flute at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance, where she has been recognized for her teaching and scholarship, receiving the 2006 Henry Russel Award.
Shivaswamy has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in concerts across Europe, Asia and North America. She has also toured internationally with Grammy/Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman and has been featured in various recordings and performances for films.
