Greek tragedy “Antigone” takes Alkek stage
Weatherford College Fine Arts presents the Greek tragedy “Antigone” March 6-8 in the Alkek Fine Arts Center.
Showtimes are 7 p.m. each day and admission is free.
Theatre director James Brownlee chose this Sophocles classic due to the compelling story.
“The kingdom of Thebes is in a state of civil unrest,” he said. “Prior to the action of the play, Polyneices and Eteocles (Antigone's brothers) kill one another in battle over the throne. Creon, the new king, orders Eteocles to be buried with honors while Polyneices is left to rot on the battlefield.
“Defying the king's decree, Antigone performs the burial ritual on her dishonored brother so that his soul may be free. Her devotion to familial duty sets off a series of events that threaten to not only destroy her family, but the great city-state of Thebes as well.”
The play is rated PG. Young children are welcome to attend, but the target audience is teens and older.
